Green on Red was an American rock band, formed in the Tucson, Arizona punk scene, but based for most of its career in Los Angeles, California, where it was loosely associated with the Paisley Underground. Earlier records have the wide-screen psychedelic sound of first-wave desert rock, while later releases tended more towards traditional country rock. The band began in 1979 as The Serfers, a four-piece made up of Dan Stuart vocalsguitar, Jack Waterson bass, Van Christian. Red, Green, Blend was a minigame in Epic Minigames. It was replaced by Mechanical Mayhem, which holds similar gameplay but in a more appealing way. Players spawn in a cylindrical room with red, green, and blue lasers. The lasers will start to spin and will go from transparent to opaque at certain intervals for 60 seconds. The red laser spins slightly faster compared to the green and blue lasers, which both spin at the same speed. Green on Red - Gravity Talk 1983 FULL ALBUM - Продолжительность: 45:26 Really. I have a copy of the 12" and listening today heard a weird tape fold/glitch (?) at around the 1:03 mark in the 2nd track LA VIDA MUERTA (It sounds like a strange time signature, but doesn't fit). Seeing as no one has a definitive way of telling the counterfeit from the original release? If you have a DEFINITE original copy of this could you have a listen to that track and let us know in the comments whether the glitch is on your copy too, thankyou!

If ever there was a band that shot its creative load on its debut release, and then proceeded to diminish in quality with each succeeding work, it's Tucson, AZ transplants Green on Red. Their self-titled 1981 EP is damn near impossible to find in the wild, so your reviewer is basing his evaluation on mp3s.

Two Bibles kicks off the EP nicely, with a dark tale of murder and suspicion set to the paranoid vocals of Dan Stuart (long before his voice deteriorated into a bad imitation of Mick Jagger and Neil Young). Chris Cacavas' keyboards (I still can't tell if he's playing a synthesizer or an organ with amplifiers) are minimalist and spacey, almost sounding like Wall of Voodoo. Alex MacNicol also shines musically with his sudden transition into bongo-style drumming after Stuart's vocals fade out (Another strong point of this song, I might add). The song closes nicely with some truly hair-raising guitar feedback. Two Bibles is a lost classic worth resurrecting, and easily the best song Green on Red ever recorded.

From there, the EP dips in quality, but not too heavily. La Vida Muerta fits the band's Tucson roots perfectly, with Cacavas switching to a demented honky-tonk style of piano playing. Unfortunately, Stuart begins adding bad, scratchy-sounding guitar jangle that anticipates his subsequent descent into lame country-rock. MacNicol and Jack Waterson merely provide the rhythm, neither good nor bad, just something to add background dressing. This is the only instrumental on the EP, although there is a nice shouted chorus (Green! Red! West! East!) heard 3 times, along with an odd band dialogue that closes the track.

Next up is New World, a stream-of-consciousness rant with dull lyrics and even duller vocals. Musically it's all over the place, but not in a good way: the drumming is rudimentary, the bass is so quiet it may as well not even be there, Dan Stuart's still producing the guitar equivalent of diarrhea, and Cacavas barely has a chance to show off more honky tonk-style piano. Take a hard pass here.

Things pick up briefly with Not Today. Jack Waterson has a rare chance to shine, with his bass sounding deep and throbbing. Cacavas contributes eerie keyboards that sound like a scary carousel ride out of Hell, especially in the last minute. Unfortunately, Stuart can't resist adding more sloppy guitar riffs, but at least they're confined to the chorus.

A Tragedy closes the EP on a terrible note. The lyrics are downright stupid, even if they're intended to evoke a psilocybin-induced stupor (Lecturing, to the group about the gravity of discovery/And the tragedy of a fellow, his friend). Everyone here is on auto-pilot mode, musically. Not even Cacavas can bring the goods here, as he recycles his honky tonk sound a third time.

After another self-titled EP (released the following year, on Steve Wynn's Down There label), Green on Red plunged into a bottomless well of mediocrity. Trading in their early paranoid post-punk sound for the worst country-rock and Paisley Underground cliches, GoR only got worse with each succeeding release. What a shame.

A nice bootleg of this exists, identical to the original, also on red vinyl. The original has a cardboard cover though (like the one pictured).
Xal
Self-released by the band and apparently limited to 500 copies. Also referred to as the "Two Bibles" EP.
