The Band That Would Be King is the seventh album released by the Maryland rock group Half Japanese. It is also their third and last studio album released on their label, 50 Skidillion Watts. Written by James Meek james. Half Japaneses stunning knack for cranking out two-minute gems during this period is even more impressive given how tumultuous that time was. The core of the band to that point was brothers David and Jad Fair, who conceived and launched Half Japanese from a bedroom in their parents house. So it had to be a blow when, before the recording of Music to Strip By, David exited the group. Charmed Lifes buoyancy morphs into something harsher on The Band That Would Be King. The songs are still sharp, but the execution is rawer and rougher, and the bands churn feels frustrated, sometimes even angry. The album is a perfect medley of humorous lo-fi rock & roll hit singles and little experimentations. Icing on the cake: Kramer, Georges Cartwright, Fred Frith, and John Zorn are in on this. Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the band, this mockumentary is mildly entertaining though not as zany or original as its model, This Is Spinal Tap. October 10, 2006 Rating: B-. Emanuel Levy. One critic in this film compares it to the John ColtraneRashied Ali album Interstellar Space, and I do agree with that comparison to a certain degree, the difference being that Coltrane and Ali were both expert musicians playing at the top of their game, and Half Japanese were just two young kids making some good noise. Sure, they're no virtuosos, but neither were the Ramones who ended up in the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame. Rock'n'roll is about emotion, and bands like Half Japanese get much closer than most mainstream bands to expressing emotion in an unfettered way. I think it's disingenuous to say that Jad Fair can't write lyrics, but other than that, I'll concede that not everything is for everyone. Type Album. Released date 1989.
