ALBUM INFORMATION This album is called ''Failures For Gods'', an album with some similarities with ''Here In After''. Both of the albums has the same kind of brutal sound but this album has been turned up in speed just a little bit. The crazy and complicated guitar work is still the main dish along with the cookie monster vocals. As any death-metal these guys also focus their lyrics against god and jesus and stuff that comes along with them, these lyrics is definitely not about peace, love and understanding. Failures for Gods pretty much continues where its immediate predecessor left off, but there's some noticeably important differences. The most important one is that the songs are generally a lot more ambitious in terms of scope than HiA's was the tracks are longer for the most part, but in terms of structure and arrangement this expands on the epic, almost cinematic feeling that the band had done previously with tracks like After My Prayers and Christ's Cage. The songs on this record are absolutely fantastic, and arguably some of the very best Immolation have ever come up with. The riffwork is inexorably twisted, utilizing some of the most bizarre harmonics in all of metal

This is perhaps one of the sickest yet ignored masterpiece to have ever been produced by Immolation. Featuring tight, punishing musicianship addled with murky production, Failures for Gods served as a strong reminder that death metal crafted by these New Yorkers is still unchallenged by many a peer. Despite the fact that the bass drums sounded too solid, as if one is playing basketball in a gas chamber, this somehow enhances the album overall unmerciful brutality. Ross Dolan vocal is as amazing as ever; he sounded like the devil himself, roaring for sinful souls to join him in one way journey to Hell. There is something about lyrics penned by Immolation that captivates me the most; their ability to channel a highly concentrated assault against religious establishment, Christianity in particular simply goes beyond anticipation. Instead of barking 'Satan' or 'kill the priests, let's-shit-on-the-Bible-fuckfest', Dolan and co. carefully fleshed out their words and they breathed life into them. The lyrics are something to contemplate, something to think about without being too generic or bland. This tradition has been embellished ever since the release of their magnum opus 'Here in After' and subsequent materials to follow. However, Immolation purposely distant themselves from their trademark complexity both in terms of music and lyrics after 'Shadows in the Light.' As a result, Failures for Gods is nonetheless an instant classic, a must have album for diehard death metal fans. That is, if you are serious enough to appreciate the talents and musical capacity in sole possession of the mighty Immolation.
Wonderful review, and another fan in agreement with you here. This album is one that defies the limits of death metal despite the sub-genre's strict adherence to unwritten rules about what goes and what doesn't. And you hit the nail on the coffin about the lyrics on their albums, this one in particular - they hold weight far beyond the surface and stick with you afterwards, resonating on many different levels. They're not poetic or provocative, but the words are clearly insightful and strangely mesmerizing to match the equally mind-numbing guitar work by master Vigna.

Sick as fuck!! Funny drums, amazing riffs. This albums sounds like nothing that came before it. Most people hate the production but i think it is perfecto! The kick drum sounds like someone throwing a tennis ball at a cardboard box but somehow it sounds incredible. One of the best Death Metal releases of the 90's and THE BEST Immolation album... they lost something special after this one.
