Stoner Witch is the seventh studio album by Melvins, which was released in 1994 through Atlantic Records. The album was recorded with Garth GGGarth Richardson and Joe Barresi in 19 days at the A&M Studios in Hollywood. Most of the tracks were captured in a single take, and all of the tracking and mastering was completed in a single, continuous session. The title comes from a term that drummer Dale Crover and his friends used to describe the stoner chicks at their high school. Lyrics: Freedom's all lies different walk away You gotta hold your tongue you gotta hit it with the right of way Maybe I blocked you from your 1994 11 Songs. While Houdini felt like the Melvins version of a major-label album, Stoner Witch just sounds like a straight Melvins record. The band streamlined its studio team and brought onboard bassist Mark Deutrom. For the first time in years, the Melvins were a functional, democratic trio, and their triangulated chemistry is what brings Stoner Witch to life. Sweet Willy Rollbar, Revolve, June Bug and Magic Pig Detective exhibit the bands tightest playing to date. After years of experiments in deconstruction, here they are simply a smoking-hot rock band. Listen free to Melvins Stoner Witch Skweetis, Queen and more. 11 tracks 49:47. Stoner Witch Q&A. Producers Garth Richardson & Melvins. Writers Buzz Osborne, Dale Crover & Mark Deutrom. Art Direction Mackie Osborne. Bass Mark Deutrom. Picking up on the basic framework of Houdini, Stoner Witch resolves into an ear-catching workup of classic rock themes, tempered, of course, with a fairly judicious sampling of acid-trip detours. Where Houdini resided more in an expansive - though lugubriously heavy - metal vein, refining the techniques built up through the band's early struggles, Stoner Witch truly showcases the band at the apex of their wide-ranging creative abilities. This is the reissue to get. MOV absolutely destroys the third man reissues (for all three Atlantic albums). Much quieter and dynamic. Flat vinyl that is perfectly centered. Can hear much better detail but it seems the tape that was used to cut these from (or the digital transfer at least) is getting a bit old in the tooth. Some minor drop outs in places that I do not remember from the old cd versions, though my system is much more resolving now so perhaps thats why I can hear it now? The tape issue I have noticed in spots for all three albums. Minor for sure and certainly not worth spending the money on crackly and scratched original pressings.
This copy sounds awful, along with the rest of the third man reissues. Noisy as hell. Avoid and get the Music on Vinyl reissue instead. Way way better. If your copy on third man sounds good, wait till you hear the MOV. Sold my third man copies of all three and got the MOV as replacements. Much happier.
Wow. We had ourselves a little press-off between Third Man and MOV and Third Man got DUNKED on, right down to on the artwork.
Another perfect pressing by Music On Vinyl. They did a great job with the re-releases of the Melvins!
My copy is spotlessly clean, as is nearly every single one of the many Music On Vinyl titles I own. Lovely mastering as per usual and a nice quality gatefold sleeve. Definitely a winner.
My copy sounds great... I'm no audiophile but it seems quiet and dynamic.
i got a copy of the black vinyl too. really, it sounds so good that it's kind of hard to think that it is a bootleg.
The mastering sounds much better on this release than the third man pressing. The packaging is top notch. HOWEVER. Much to the chagrin of the "MOV CAN DO NO WRONG" disciples, there are some quality control issues. My disc came with some hideous scuffs right out of the package, despite the poly-lined inner. While this isn't as noisy as the third man pressing, it does suffer from the occasional pop/crackle throughout.
Why do so many copies of this have the sawcut? Mine does as well
How does this sound compared to the 3rd Man version?
I have the two reissues, and I can tell you that the MOV version sounds much better than the TMR one. It has also the same packaging than the original vinyl version, not a copy of the CD version.
Pretty sure this is a bootleg, Third Man has the rights to this record and Music on Vinyl is a sketchy label. Believe they are exploiting a european law that allows bootleged material.
The TMR sound fine, mine sound really good. I dont get the hate on them. and Ive even relisted to them after reading the negative posts.
You are pretty sure that Music On Vinyl is a bootleg label?? Ohh really??? Maybe you have to search better about it friend....
bigchasenugg Mov istally not a bootleg label. Licensing agreements vary between countries. Mov consistently puts out quality releases, this one being no exception. Sounds better by leaps and bounds to the tmr version. Agreed the TMR version is shit
I can confirm that this MOV reissue sounds very good! Perfect pressing and beautifully printed litho gatefold sleeve too.
Mov is totally not a bootleg label. Licensing agreements vary between countries. Mov consistently puts out quality releases, this one being no exception. Sounds better by leaps and bounds to the tmr version.
Why the heck was this reissue necessary? Third Man just released their version.
This is a way better pressing. It is necessary for that reason alone. I brought back the TMR after one play and this one is sitting on my shelf. Mystery solved.
Maybe to get it at a more reasonnable price in Europe than the TMR reissue, plus if the pressing is less crappy, I’ll give it a chance...
Little Devil
Fair enough. I hope folks can comment on the quality of this release.
yeah, the Third Man pressing is just AWFUL! I'm certainly tempted buy yet another copy thanks to MOV...
I'd imagine that Third Man is using their own pressing plant by now.
As many people know, the Third Man Records pressings on United Record Pressing sucks and the Music On Vinyl pressings on Record Industry are good.
Same. I guess I better get going on my very own Stoner Witch reissue!
I think that the reason is one. They need money..
Got myself an original copy and I can tell you it sounds way better then this. A side was very noisy but the original sounded amazing. Good news is there's a repress on MOV so should sound good
Don't know what everyone is complaining about. My copy sounds great!
This reissue is fantastic. I love the new take on the original art and the translucent purple vinyl is beautiful. Its extremely limited and hand numbered too which is awesome. I picked this up at a show on their 2016 tour. I almost didnt buy it due to the price, but my girlfriend talked me into it knowing i would regret it if i didnt. Love that woman...yeah, i would prefer an original press, but this will do until i run across one in my price range. Hey, it could happen. I cant believe what this is selling for already. I would probably trade it for original presses of SW and Houndini tho. Any takers? Lol
Found my copy to be very quiet and generally lacking.
Man, how I wished to have this one on vinyl. Thanks Jack White for this one and for "Stag", too. Very happy to have this with me now.
Mine is a bit warped and noisy, but plays fine. I'd rather have it on cassette in all honesty, but the prices for that are obscenely unnecessary.
I bought this one in 1994, the year it came out. I can hardly believe this is a bootleg.
I've heard better dynamics for a 180g vinyl, but my copy sounds pretty fine to me. Worth the price, it could have been better but i've no complaint on it.
Holy crap, this version sucks so bad! I'm gonna love seeing idiots tear each other apart for a copy while spending a week worth of their salary.
This NEW thing with that NEW cover is away from originality of this masterpiece! Third Man Records should respect the History of music & stop making "innovations" with NEW / remaking covers! And it costs 200+bucks....
how the fuck can anybody go around acting the way you do. it's astonishing how stupid and hubristic you are.
Third Man Records had nothing to do with the new covers though. TMR turned over all their colored vinyl for the Melvins reissues to Amphetamine Reptile Records and HAZE XXL did the covers. These limited versions were distributed via AmRep and on tour with The Melvins. And they also didn't cost $200 retail... TMR repressed these albums on black vinyl with the original covers (at a decent retail price no less) giving fans the chance to own these records again! They should be celebrated!
I just added a couple photos of my copy that I picked up on the second date of the tour.
My copy is like variant 2 but the Matrix runout ends with #941005HH.
my copy has a skip about 30 seconds in to the first song, right after the vocals start. I returned it to the record store for a new copy and this one skips in the exact same spot. not stoked!
grand star
Bought new vinyl for Stoner Witch. Took it back for a lot of surface noise. They wished me luck. Results: A little less surface noise on one side, same on the other though. Also, some weird, short, scratchy pops in the left channel on the second side (but only a couple of spots). I called the store and told them all was well, and thanks. Why? Because, I now realize it was just either intentionally noisy, because the MELVINS wanted to say "Hey, its vinyl...what do you expect? Or, someone was smoking near the where they made the masters. Whatever.
My copy sounds really nice. Haven't checked the other 2 yet. Also it's kinda weird how Stag got a double vinyl treatment despite Stoner Witch being only 2 minutes shorter. If anything Houdini should've got it for Spread Eagle Beagle
Mr Freeman
I would agree mostly. My copy is not noisey but really lacks dynamic and treble is hardly there. Still not as bad as my houdini press. I can listen to this one and enjoy it though. Sorry to see all these issues with these reissues. Really sucks.
I got my first from TMR's, and it had a few deep scratches and some bad surface noise. I reached out to them, and they sent a replacement, it was severely warped. I bought a second copy from amazon, it came with 2 LPs, one of which was really scratched with the worst noise yet, and the other had the least noise, but it's still present. Maybe that makes 1 out of 4? Houdini and Stag sound beautiful, so maybe united were sleeping during the Stoner Witch pressing... Still glad to finally own this without paying the outrageous sum people try to get for an original.
My pressing sounds raelly good don't know about a bad batch but I can't really complain about this one.
Lack of treble and lots of surface noise on this pressing, not what we should expect from a 180g edition.
The weight of the record doesn't have anything to do with the sound quality.
Anyone experiencing a lot of noise in the left channel?
Reissue of this, Stag, and Houdini are now available for pre-order via third man
You people trying to sell this for more than double the average price are ridiculous.
It concerns the law of supply and demand my friend..put 50 of the original records for sale at 20 bucks each and you can rest assure people will bring down their price...but the trick is finding 20 of these in prestine condition to carry such a task...third man just rereleased it for 20 bucks a pop..but...its not the same 1994 original pink vinyl gatefold record.
this has been in my want list too....I just found a VG+ copy on the wall in a local record store for 150. Still too expensive, but way less than these offers.
2011 release is wrong. way earlier than this. owned this for many years prior to 2011.
Look at the bar code. Not the same at all.
There are two bootlegs of this. Yours is this one:
kind of strange to find an Atlantic release and not have a release year?
I just added pics of my copy. I have owned this since at least '99 0r '00. the sound is amazing bootleg or not. I have not been able to find out anything about this version. sleeve states made in usa and a 1994 date.
good news:"Third Man Records Might Be Re-Releasing the Melvins’ Atlantic LPs"
I've had this for years. Sounds great. Do the other peoples copies have the (I believe) French language writing in the center labels? Or does there need to be a release added?
I got a copy of the black vinyl. I bought it thinking for sure it was a bootleg, and got a good price at about $50USD, but it sounds and looks legit. If it is a bootleg, it is by far the best bootleg I have ever seen. I would like to know for 100% certainty either way.
Just to follow up and let people know, the black vinyl is a bootleg from the 90s. The sound quality is on the higher end for a bootleg vinyl though, one of the better bootlegs out there. I wouldn't pay anywhere near the price for the pink version for it, but it is worth $40-55 in my opinion.
It's not clear to me... is this a bootleg or not?
