What's wrong with it ?This reissue sounds allright for me.Nothing more to say actually.
Sounds wonderful and cut at 45RPM. The plain hate is just hearsay here.
The only issue I had was a bit of surface noise at the beginning of C2, and I'm sure if I gave it a clean that would disappear, other than that it's perfect.
I made the mistake of buying it and THEN reading reviews. Realized I had indeed purchased the Plain Recordings version. Braced myself for the worst. Well, those concerns were *mostly* unfounded. It sounds pretty good, if not a tad thin and a bit quiet in spots.
This one is a real peach. Mesmerizing. Stunning. Arguably his masterwork, depending upon your opinion of Ladies and Gentlemen or Pure Phase. Worth the trouble if you can find a clean original Dedicated pressing.
Steel balls
Like the last commenter, my copy is cut at 45rpm and also sounds great.
anyone got a copy of just this seven inch by chance?
As reviewed by me in December 2000:Fans of Spacemen 3 and Slowdive should enjoy this one. It's hi-fi shoegaze, with the distortion and noise safely reigned in, effectively lifting a haze that had been obscuring some fabulous psychedelic pop songwriting. However, in seeking sophistication the genre lost a bit of its edge. Maybe it's just the romance of shoegaze as rock 'n' roll wearing off, though, for this album tries out new ideas and is every bit as earnest as J. Spaceman's earlier productions. Most of the tracks have contemplative vocals woven seamlessly into the sonic tapestry, and often hint at the sound of old Primal Scream in more ways than one.
My copy is definitely cut at 45rpm and sounds terrific, some bad reviews here on this pressing, but there must be some good ones out there, because mine plays absolutely fine. Go figure.
The ultimate shoegazing album. While Ladies and Gentlemen is a masterpiece of Spiritualized as we know know them to be-purveyors of Gospel/Junkie rock, Lazer Guided Melodies is blissed out dream rock, and Shoegazing noise assaults. While staying closer to Spacemen 3 in spirit, this is nonetheless a product of Jason Pierce's noisy guitar centered mind, and not Sonic Boom's electronic/analog synth experimental style. One of the best albums ever made
Not only is the quality poor, but disc one, even though it states that it is "Stereo 45" actually plays at 33 1/3 RPM, while disc 2 states the same (Stereo 45) and actually *does* play at 45 RPM. No idea how such a ridiculous manufacturing error can occur.
This 7" doesn't need a standalone entry here. It is part of an LP package
One of the most beautiful records I've ever heard -- having this original Dedicated pressing (as opposed to the reportedly sub-par Plain remaster, or the CD, etc) makes a HUGE difference. I can't emphasize this enough. With a decent system this album will flow through your speakers like liquid morphine. Gorgeous and ethereal and ephemeral and haunting -- and, above all, astonishingly well-produced. Certainly Spiritualized's finest hour, too: it's at least as focused and consistent as the (masterful) following two LPs, and far more interesting in sound and style than what came after that. Worth every penny if you can find a good copy.
Agree, i got an original mint copy recently. The sound is nuts!
This is not a separate item from Should be combined. The longbox does not change the item in any way.
came with printed innersleeves and a front-sticker
bought this reissue and had to exchange it due to a skip on the opening of the first track of the first record (side 1) and crackles and pops all over the place. played the new exchanged record only to find the same exact skip, crackles and pops in the same exact spot. however, i did notice better pressing quality on their other Spiritualized album reissues (Fucked Up Inside, Royal Albert Hall and Ladies & Gentlemen...)
it does say made in Germany on the back of the sleeve...
Yes, same on my copy. Could it be a European release?
There are those living on the dark side of the moon who are gonna claim that Lazer Guided Melodies is far superior than anything materialized by Spacemen 3 and have obviously not considered All That Noise by The Darkside. And while this may be debatable, let me take the easy way out and say, ”Why shouldn’t it be better? Lessons were learned, stratospheres were explored, and like any good drug, once one knows the limitations, developing a more rich body of work while expanding on familiar concepts is exactly what an artist is supposed to do.”At the time of it’s release, Lazer Guided Melodies with its stunning sustained fuzzed out guitars, and draped in a feedback of white noise atmospheres, it quickly got dropped into the new Shoegazer genre ... though with its drifting synth-laden washes and laid back temperature, it instantly became a stepping stone that sonically connected both the Psychedelic and Space Rock genres, along with the wasted attitudes and vibes of The Velvet Underground, creating an exploratory doorway into the world of pure fine-tuned industry grade pharmaceuticals. On this outing there were no questions about where the drugs where going to take the music, unlike the days of heady LSD and questionable methamphetamines, Jason’s adventures are calculated, precise and repeatable, giving the listener a comfortable familiar warm space to drift off and escape to.Jason Pierce has achieved this sonic wonder through a structure of repetitive melodies onto which he lays delightful turns and changes in tempo without getting edgy or causing the listener to do more than smile with eyes half closed at the blissed sexual softness surrounding them. I fully realize that I seem to be touting the virtues of drugs and all that encompasses them and perhaps I am, though one could easily point to the lives of both Sonic Boom [Pete Kember] and Spaceman [Jason Pierce] and make the argument that the music was a direct outcropping of their pharmaceutical forays. In the fashion of other concept albums, Lazer Guided Melodies has been divided into a series of four mini-symphonies ... each conveniently suited for an album side. There’s a bit of experimentation, but for the most part this symphonic flight is light and airy, creating a new super highway on which to place Ken Kesey’s overhauled Further Bus, complete with comfortable seats, a better sound system, and hyper-drive ... where it may not take you further, but you will arrive more relaxed and energized.Writing as I am here with 20/20 hindsight, I must say that both Kember and Pierce were so much more together than they are as solo artists. What makes this album so good is that the dream of Spacemen 3 is still visible within these grooves, with the weaker material being Jason Pierce attempting to find his way without his old dance partner.*** The Fun Facts: Following the breakdown in relations between Spacemen 3 co-founders Peter Kember [Sonic Boom] and Jason Pierce [J. Spaceman], the group's bassist Will Carruthers, drummer Jonny Mattock, and guitarist Mark Refoy were asked by Pierce to form a new group including longtime friend Steve Evans, subsequently calling themselves Spiritualized. The band took their name ‘Spiritualized’ from an adaptation of the text on the back label of a bottle of Pernod … yep, it was that simple. Strange how the letter ’S’ shows up repeatedly in Spacemen 3, Spiritualized, and Pete Kember’s band Specturm.Jason Pierce on the album's artwork - “The artwork was done by Natty (Brooker), who I used to live with in Rugby. He used to wake up in the morning and start his day with mushrooms. Like days and days, he would have all the dried mushrooms under his bed and do these amazing drawings, and he kind of lost himself in his art. He’d done a couple of things for Spaceman 3, so when we did our first album I asked him if he’d do the artwork for that. I suppose when you start bands you involve everybody, as many people who want to get involved who aren’t pissed off that you’re going to be traveling beyond the town. So he did that, and then somebody at the label … if you’re taking a photograph for a toothpaste ad, somebody makes a model of the toothpaste to take the photo with. I’d always been in to artwork, but the idea that you can get the record company to pay to have this drawing made in to a three-dimensional image, it suddenly clicked with me that we didn’t have to settle for the given standards. My line was always ,‘We’re making beautiful music here. We shouldn’t be packaging it like the cheapest junk we possible can.’”Review by Jenell Kesler
Stay away from this terrible reissue. Poor quality.
..and stay away from this reissue label completely. They apparently try ripping their customers off, which is sad as they manage getting rights for some excellent records. Shame.
To me, this is the greatest LP of the 1990s by a band (excluding electronic genres) due to the high quality of the songs, the absolutely fantastic production (listen to the cleanliness of the bass that you can listen to without any clipping), the high quality of the original vinyl, and a wonderful balance between instrumentation and space between the drums. The keyboards shimmer as if they come from Asgard (any SG-1 fans will get it), the bass dominates as if from Mars, and the guitars as if they're being broadcasted from the heavens.Listen to this LP for the first time with an open mind, in your room, sitting down and not doing anything. The first time I heard it was on a long road trip by myself. It can be said that this album is one of those rare examples that bests their influences, instead of mimicing them.As always, stray away from Plain Recordings, the worst reissue plant in the history of vinyl, and either track down an original copy from this site or ebay. If you want their vampire squid quality, go for it. Your ears and wallet will suffer greatly. There are plenty of copies of this around, spend alittle more if you're a vinyl person or track down the CD> (Do not get the BMG rpessed version, as there is a skip on Angel Sigh). All in all, the greatest album of the 90s for me in the traditional rock and roll band era.
