Rapping since the youthful age of 16, he later went on to co-found the group UBU. With partner Brother Browne, the group explored spirituality and culture to the tune of lyrical abstractions and blazing hot hip hop beats. The duo enjoyed success with two independent releases, Deep Space and Radical Spiritual Aggression. Soundcloud Artist Delete All Contacts lost his fight with cancer at the weekend,he was huge talent and personality. I wanted to post some of his tunes from a band called SUN taken from an album called HYPNOTIKI that he cowrote with Chris Andrews in the early nineties. I cowrote Mezmorized with Spence,we had a portastudio and a drum synths. When I turned up to rerecord the guitar parts for the Album,he had nicked all my lines for the vocal,I didn't mind , Life was always colourfull when Spence was about. Still In Mind
Superb album, catches the feel of the real deal at the time. We Love You was heavily played on the warehouse scene in the very early nineties as was Xenon '88. Amazing work on a low budget and bedroom style studio of the time. I have the UK version on CD which I picked up about 1993, although my CD is very tired now I still listen with much love. For such a manic cheesy piano loop and breakbeat drum style I personally find it a very chilled listen nowadays but also remember at the time people going mad for it! The band were famous, or perhaps notorious for the eroticism in their gigs with naked bellydancers and even the female vocal often topless at gigs again in the spirit of the time. Dr. Crippen was also a well known face on the scene and features in the first issue of Rave Revue, a fanzine for the rave massive, with his recollections of an underground rave in Italy en route to the last night of Amnesia in Ibiza. I couldn't agree more with Escapists review(s)! This for me is probably the most enduring of the early warehouse scene stuff. There are obvious similarities of style to Prodigy's Experience and even Music for the Jilted Generation. As y-1 pointed out they share common samples with 808 State mainly due to commonality of equipment in the early days of bedroom production, I would also compare them to Acen, another favourite of mine from the time, in their quirkiness and the overall feel. Highly recommended, after twenty years I'm still not tired of listening to this album!
A very obscure album! Although obviously S.U.N. were hyped on the London scene for a short period in history, they remained unknowns in the rest of the world. But for the few who found out about S.U.N., they seem to be a hot topic! Now is Hypnotiki any good? Yes, it is!
Most striking of all, Hypnotiki is a manic, delirious, very colourful and energetic affair which lets you feel the spirit of the producers and the party they must have had. There's a kind of a punk attitude in the vibe (intensified by the very DIY cover artwork), and judging by the vocal samples and the liner notes the producers were on some mighty good trips when doing this album.
Looking for comparisons, 808 State must be named as the most obvious influence; the S.U.N. tune "Big!" also uses the drumloop of 808 State's "Techno Bell". Alongside S.U.N., The Prodigy were developping a similar vision. Though in 1992 The Prodigy were more sophisticated in terms of production, S.U.N. were pointing the way for their fellow ravers with their wild and eclectic concept of sound. Both groups also used similar types of heavy drummachine breakbeats and nasty synth lines, and as The Prodigy, S.U.N. seem to have had great melodic sense and musical abilities. They never sound arty, though, but used their talents in favour of the most freaked out hardcore tunes.
Well, is it real hardcore, then? Mostly, yes. Still, the variation between the tunes is high, and many other styles shine through. At first listen, I was a bit confused and found the album slightly disconnected, but now it makes perfect sense for me; there was just hardly anybody else mixing styles in the same way.
"Xenon '88" is the most mental track of the pack, delivering a multitude of stab sequences in a wild succession. "Dictorobotary" has a little more laidback and tripped out sound and one of the most thrilling stab sequences of the album. "We Love You" is a groovy, piano-laden Rolling Stones cover (one of four tunes with vocals on the album), and it's at least as good as Candyflip's take on The Beatles, only faster and more energetic. "Spirality" is an ethereal uptempo proto-trip hop affair, balancing well between sweet and dark. "L.S.Dream" is an uncompromising breakbeat hardcore tune which I'm sure would have had great response at any rave. "Vision" is the album's low point. It has a gorgeous intro, but the schlager type of chorus melody drags the tune down. Thumbs up again for "Hardware Junky", a slightly mellow breakbeat tune with another very nasty stab sequence. "Mesmorized" was recorded together with a guitar player; unfortunately, he starts wanking during the intro (though if you dig Ozric Tentacles, who were – according to the liner notes – adored by the S.U.N. people, you might like this type of guitar sound), but then he restricts himself to some decent funky wah-wah noises, and the tune can be recognized as another nice pop-oriented song. "Hypnotiki" is a successful try at a little opus, and its ten and a half minutes of length are fully justified. It starts with some serious techno sounds, then develops into another startlingly melodic breakbeat section, and ends as a noisy industrial monster. "Big!" is another hardcore tune, slightly mediocre compared to the rest – and still not bad.
I bought this cd after reading escapists enthusiasm over it. My impression is that it has too much of a cheesy "video game soundtrack" production with a hint of madchester alt. dance feeling here and there. Most of these tracks would NOT have survived being played at any rave in the UK. Although I agree that "Spirality" is the best on it and I don't mind it. The overall tone might be called "commercial".
One of the greatest rave albums ever - and no one knows about it! I had no idea what this album was about when I bought and man I was I shocked! "Xenon 88" was a small hit in the rave scene briefly in the U.K. and with good reason: it's a slammin' track with an amazing bass line and fierce rhythms. "We Love You" is a groovy little ditty (remixed three times on the album) that is both addictive and fun. My personal favorite "Spirality" is one of the greatest techno/rave tracks ever created. Consisting of one of the catchiest synth rhythms floating threw out and Antoinette's sweet vocals adding another layer of bliss, this is a classic dance track.

Oddly enough, I've seen this CD on all the major online vendors for as low as a buck and I found it kinda sad. This is the on the best and all of you rave geeks should shell out the buck and buy it!!!
I am simply amazed at the fact that no one else here on discogs owns this amazing CD! This is one of the most amazing techno/acid/rave albums I've ever heard. Released on the brink of the rave/techno phenomenoma, S.U.N. concocted some wildly, infectious beats and rhythms especially on "Xenon 88" and "L.S.Dream" which range from dance floor bass madness. Then the range slows a tad to the quirky early "trip hop"-ish "We Love You". There are a ton of samples from who knows what films/TV shows spread all over giving the album a playful tone. Antoinette's vocals on "Spirality" mixed with some super sweet synth rhythms makes it (IMO) one of the greatest rave tracks ever produced. Oddly enough, I've seen this selling at most online joints for a buck and quite frankly, it makes me sad because this is a treasure of an album. Please do yourself a favor and buy this CD!!!
