Samurai Champloo is unique, in that if you've seen the TV show, you'll recognize each of the tracks as they transition from one scene to the next. Now that I can associate the music with what the artists convey through the animation, I can agree with why this genre is a good match for the show: . wierd, untraditional, yet appropriately fulfilling. This album is yet another example of how well Japan takes to our cultures and sub-cultures. I caught the Samurai Champloo anime late one night and the music is what first caught my attention. The opening Battlecry had me dancing even after being at the club. The music is culled from the popular amine series on Cartoon Network that mixes hip hop culture with Japanese samurai culture and more than a little dose of jazzy stylings. There are vocal boom-baps and journeying spy themes, deep late night cuts and harder hitting joints, all performed by Nujabes, Fat Jon, Force Of Nature & Illicit Tsuboi. I don't mind that this is a boot; its sounds great
Anyone selling a copy of this for closer to retail? Any pressing
Are there any new Informations or knwoledge about those "unofficial" releases?
I have no idea where come from all informations about the release but it look little bit strange to me, first of all, because hhv indicate "Available since:16.10.2019" doesn't mean the release is from october 2019, then "pressed with same masters than the first release of 200 red copies", how someone can affirm this without being close of the maker.Im not convinced about the sleeve difference with the precedent red too.If someone got verified informations, please reply there
"pressed with same masters than the first release of 200 red copies"Simply same runouts, same stampers, two release in hands...Both releases side by side here:-The second batch is slighly less red (or more yellow) than the first limited one -The second batch shows the image on a smaller scale. On the spine, the difference in scale is obvious if you look at the position of the cat# and distances between small dots. "I have no idea where come from all informations about"You could just read the release's history...where all those info was already given...Also please comment here :
Super P
The sound quality is pretty good, especially considering it might not be an official release (although we don't have the definitive answer yet...). The print quality isn't good, both on the main cover and the labels, the inner sleeves are the most basic ones you can find, made of thin paper that creates dust easily. The three records are just put together inside a simple sleeve, but there's enough room for them to be removed and put back easily with no effort. The centre holes are too small, one of the didn't even fit at all, I had to skim a bit of matter on each record to make them fit on my turntable. There wasn't any "Limited" sticker on it, and no plastic wrapping at all, there was however a white sticker with a barcode on the sleeve itself, but it was easily removed without any marks left.
yeah, I just purchased a copy and am super confused about when, where and why they were made. I know that the orange and red variants seem to have been limited to 200 copies each. I'm not sure how many of the green variants were pressed and I cant find any reliable source of information on it either. The whole thing seems a little rushed and like corners were cut, but I can't really complain with how it sounds. Mine came with a plastic outer sleeve with a resealable flap and the brand on it is "OKER Brand", Of course this could just be an extra sleeve that someone had lying around, but I thought that I'd mention it.
I ordered both the limited orange from Vinyl Digital and then the green version from HHV and both SKIP LIKE CRAZY on the second track in the same exact spot. Not worth the time or money to send these back. What a disappointing reissue.
i just got my green one in the mail, i am not having any issues with skipping, sound quality is pretty good too!
won't you please add runouts on this release's entry? this to compare to this last batch and ad RP tag if it reveals to came from the same masters
Im sorry to tell you but the original black version jump too, just need to add little bit of weight and it works.
Spinning the red now. It sounds absolutely excellent. Outside of it potentially being a boot, I have absolutely no problems with this release~ and no, I have no intention of dishing out $450 for an OP khaki color~ i'm stoked on this.
I know that Fatbeats was also selling the Red (or orange?) and it sold out and they recently sold out of the green.
(Echoing user maoxiung in the release edits) This release is strange but: one could imagine it was planned for an official release and the deal fell apart mid production. Instead of making a new cover they quickly slapped the 2013 one on there and called it a day to sell their stock quickly. That could explain why retailers advertised the "AS044LTD" cat # instead of the one on the cover and the use of the original stampers. All we know is that Fat Jon said in a mail that "long story short" (that citation is important), it is unofficial, but to what extent? This release is pretty mysterious to begin with, something shady must have happened at some point. Any kind of information surrounding this would be great, i'm curious about all this.By the way, excellent pressing. The sound on this one is pretty good and i'm glad to see my copy does not skip, so i guess it depends on the hardware you use (The VU meters look like it's well balanced and mastered). Records are properly centered and are really clean. If this is really a boot, it's up there with the best (I've seen official ones worse than that).
I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one wondering how a unoficial can be pressed with original stampers :)
So. My copy is finally at home and I can say, there is nothing wrong with it. A good copy, good sound, no skipping. And to be honest, I don’t care about the unofficial thing. I am happy to have it here.
Got my green copy a couple of days ago from Juno, sounding quality, no jumps, pops, clicks or skips. Could someone add the green copy to this page please? I'm not quite sure what I'm doing, TIA.
I just got my red copy, and track 2 is jumping all over the place! :(
Give it a good cleaning, you should be fine. Inspect the areas where it's skipping
Mine plays fine (so at least 5 boring more words )
same as the original pressings. words words words words words
I saw someone on reddit theorize that these new color reissues were supposed to be official but something happened where Fat Jon couldn't get samples or tracks cleared and is doing this lowkey while denying that they're legit, which is why so many retailers have had them. It seems wild, but is there any credence to this? It's a shitty thing either way you look at it, but nothing on or any of FJ's social medias are helping to clear this up.
Sadaron above the Gods
If you look at the 2007,2011,2012 and 2013 pressing. Each one is slightly different from the next. Weather its the label, Front artwork, Back artwork, Sleeve color, ect ect. Its not uncommon at all for artist to simply lose the original art works. Actually happened to Open Mike Eagle when he wanted to get "Unapologetic Art Rap" pressed by VMP so they had to make new ones for him. Not sure the story behind these buts considering how different each pressing is from the next its pretty confusing. Nothing is clear cut.
i called groove distribution in May when the last batch of OG copies were found about my order being canceled. the employee said they wanted to repress the record but could not find the original artwork used. they settled for this in the end it seems, instead of creating new art.
Labels seems to be badly cropped versions of the original, I'd think Fat Jon would have access to the original files of a record/label he already pressed like 6 times before scanning and cropping his own release to make a fake bootleg... but then, that's my opinion...
More found here ha ha ha more words. Hurry and grab a copy
I got my copy from Juno. It just arrived. Funny enough the Green version is not even listed here. Looks like a bootleg - low quality labels, okish cover. Wasn't shrink wrapped. I'll give it a listen after work and update this comment.
Got my copy a few days ago.Sounds excellent.Minimal noise/clicks/pops.Arrived unsealed from HHV.
Mysterious Wrench
Bootleg or not it sounds fantastic on my retro turntable. Just received it last night and have been bumping it non stop, just happy to own it
The worst thing is that they have it (hhv) restock 2 times in 2 days, and they tell me that they could not send me my copies because they did not stock up. . Crook. I ordered many times, and dropped a lot of money in their shop and here is the result ..I will never order from you again.
What has is it to do with THIS version? And what has is it to do with discogs? If you have problems with hhv, write them. They are very correct. I‘ve ordered and bought so many times there, local as well as online, never any problems.
Arcanescar removes my order without reason for the RED edition Do not hope to have a copy at less than 90-100 euros.I think a small restock of the official appeared at 12:35 but it's not in stock, missed.Good day everyone.
Sounds exactly the same as the 2012 reissue and even has the same groove issue with A-2 Nightshift where it loops parts of the song. There was that one person that supposedly reached out to Fat Jon about this being bootleg but havent seen anything posted on his official site and social media as the email said he would.
Reached out to him through the contact on his website to confirm and it is not official.
Yeah I'm wondering to what extent these are unofficial. Straight up bootlegs or did they go through an official channel that didn't require him to sign off on it? If it's using the same plates as the previous release, that sounds closer to the latter. I'd compare deadwax but nobody has recorded it on earlier pressings...the guy that cut the lacquer supposedly retired in 2014, so old plates at least seem likely
Well not only the masters, they would've had access to the actual stamper plates since the groove issue is a physical defect. I'm gonna send a message through his website contact myself to make sure
I'm waiting for my copy to confirm that, but could it be possible they used the same / a similar master? Since this "is a bootleg" i think it's pretty unlikely they have access to the "original" 2012 masters. Or the 2012 one is not official too and that's even more unlikely (they do look very similar with the same kinda blurry graphics tho).
Little Devil
I haven't played mine yet, so I can't comment on sound quality, but holy cow this was an unprofessional packaging job lol. I see there is already a comment on bare bones packaging, but the kicker for me was that they put the hype sticker directly on the sleeve. So take care peeling that off or just leave it I guess.
100%. My record was bent really badly on two corners - giant fold marks on the outer sleeve. The thing is, it arrived with the mailer looking perfectly flat and unabused. So, it was definitely bent before it got packed. Thanks a ton, GrooveDis, for selling fucked up stock with no discount. The sticker stuck right on the sleeve is just the cherry on top of this shit cake.
Until a proper reissue happens, this will have to hold me over for now.
Wondering if this is worth it to keep instead of paying hundreds of dollars for a legit copy.
I probably would not have purchased this had I known it was an unofficial pressing but since I did I can confirm it was pressed really well. I have owned a few unofficial albums in my life and this is at the nicer end of the spectrum soundwise. The surface noise is minimal to non existent and there is a good amount of bass. As far as packaging goes it is bare bones (not unlike the official pressing) and the image quality is sub par (again, not dissimilar to the official pressing). Overall though, while I am disappointed that it is not an official pressing, I am okay with the $35 I dropped on this. I would certainly repurchase an official reissue if one ever arises but this is a good placeholder until then.
Is there a reason this version is listed as Unofficial?
isn't the "green" one a warehouse find of the khaki version?
HHV Red is Unofficial too, and so is the upcoming green, no new pressings were done by the label since the 2013 Reissue.
Wow, that is really disappointing. Do you know whether this was also the case for the red variant released on HHV?
The label head for Ample Soul has said these latest 2019 releases were not released by them and illegitimate.
Received the Orange variant, it is an obvious bootleg. Oh well.
Same here. I'm debating cancelling my pre-order if the sound sucks as much as the packaging.Edit: My pre-order was cancelled anyways. Reason given: "we have been sent fewer copies of this record than expected and therefor have to cancel your order. We believe there will be other editions of this album available later this year." Crossing my fingers that is true (and that it's not a bootleg again).
My phone camera would just make it look much worse, images on the labels are pretty low-resolution and there's a sticker saying orange vinyl limited to 200 copies on the front, no shrink wrap. I'll give it a spin later today after work and let y'all know how it sounds.
That’s such a shame, a proper widescale reissue seriously needs to happen. But how’s it sound? I don’t quite want to cancel my preorder yet
Can you post pictures please? I need at least 10 words.
Kelezel to be some available on HHV. Shipping to the USA sucks but it's still the cheapest option
This is a bootleg record. according to Fat Jon. I would try and get refunds if you haven't already.
I wrote Ample Soul via their contact form on the website and got a response from Fat Jon via the same e-mail as in the pic below. It's definitely a bootleg.
Honestly I doubt that's his official email. I haven't been able to find a email for Fat Jon anywhere....
Someone on reddit posted this image. A response from Fat Jon.
Same, I would like to know to be sure. I had doubts from the beginning.
Where does he say it's a bootleg record? I'd like to know before I open my copy, it's still shipping to me right now.
Phobism up for alerts, sure to go quickly when it drops
I've got the orange variant for sale... do I post here? It says "red"
Sell it on instead. At least 10 words must be entered.
This discogs release is almost surely going to be deleted very soon anyway as no one has uploaded proof that they have this record in hand. Also some rumors say that this is a bootleg but i kind of doubt it is one. We'll have to patiently wait for the release date to know for sure.
Hello,Please contact me if you have a copy for sale! I totally missed the repress :(
What's crazy is. I only paid like 27 dollars on Amazon for my copy. I should've bought a stack of them.
This indeed was a warehouse find : new repress indeed
My order from Redeye got canceled, they said they would only be able to fulfill 5% of the orders they got for it.
does anyone know of anywhere else it still might be available?!
Sharpbinder can find it here. On another side its already sold out again
repress available online, get it fast ! ! ! !
Apparently this is not a repress -- Stated by distributor as 'Warehouse Find'.
does anyone know of anywhere else it still might be available?!
Here you go: hope you see this in time.
Where?? Please tell me!! 10 more words ha ha ha
Looking for Side A/B. Please message me if you’re willing to sell. Thanks!
Don’t wanna sound like a broken record lol, but I’m looking for Side A/B as well. Please message me with offer, thanks!
If anyone here is willing to sell Side A/B please message me, Thanks!
i am looking for Disc 1 Side A/B if anyone has an extra for sale. I already have the other 2 discs. Thank you :)
how do I know which pressing I have? it says as044-1 on the spine + I have the barcode on the back of the sleeve 99123 00043 - I am willing to sell:)
Does anybody know how many copies this was limited too?
The reissue was 200 copies, or at least the sticker on mine says so :)
We need a repress yeah ????, I see it a 700$ on amazon... Can't afford this..
How the hell do I get notified when a new print comes out for this? I want it so bad!
THE must-have. Essential
This release was not come in factory sealed shrink wrap.
Mine is 100% fine too.
Nevermind this other guy, I love it! The color is beautiful and I didn't notice any issues with the pressing, it's lightweight, which I love and it plays fine. Shipping didn't take very long but the sleeve has minor damage, other than that, AWESOME!
!! WARNING !!DO NOT buy this pressing! I have gone through two brand new sealed copies purchased at Amoeba Records in Los Angeles, CA and both have massive skating issues. I'm talking, my needle is hopping all over the place on every single side. It sounds great until it just freaks out! Not a turntable issue as every record I own plays flawlessly on it (Sony PS-P7X Direct Drive).BAD PRESSING. DO NO PURCHASE THE LIMITED YELLOW MARBLED VERSION OF THIS RECORD. You will be burned like I have! Luckily I will be getting a refund, but still it is a major pain in the ass.-B
I had that issue. It was the record player. This record is very sensitive. I'm now using an old school 80s Turntable and it plays fine with minor skips nothing as bad as the Crosley I first played it on. But I still love it.
No issues on my end. I've had many sexual innuendos with my better half for a minute yo! Buy on sight! If it is a defect, then return it or get a swap out ;) 5 effing stars for this release!
No issues here either on the yellow repress, odd
I had no issues with playing the vinyl. Played flawlessly, exactly the same as the other pressings. Not sure what the issue was for you, but it sounded perfect for me.
Original (2007) -> picture cover Reissue (2010) -> folded sleeve, printed 'Limited edition of 200' on back sleeve, NO barcode Reissue(2012) -> pictuer cover, the barcode printed on back cover is different from original pressing.
So is there any reason to go for the first or second print besides bragging rights?
