The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery is an album by American jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery. Most of its tracks exemplify two of Montgomery's distinguishing techniques: thumb picking and the use of octaves. In 2017, the album was selected for the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress as culturally, historically, or artistically significant. The incredible Wes Montgomery of 1960 was more discernible and distinctive than the guitarist who would emerge a few years later as a pop stylist and precursor to George Benson in the '70s. On this landmark recording, Montgomery veered away from his home Indianapolis-based organ combo with Melvin Rhyne, the California-based Montgomery Brothers band, and other studio sidemen he had been placed with briefly. O álbum de 1960 chamou atenção para o talento extraordinário de Wes. É um documento definitivo da técnica, sucessão de idéias e da concepção original Montgomery - D-Natural Blues. I don't get it, this is literally one of the greatest jazz guitar recordings, and there is not one decent pressing that you can get on the market. Not only is the music's quality degraded (the drumming sounds fizzy and dead, for example), the amount of noise and weird defects just makes it not worth it. Good luck finding a good quality OG mono

Having the US and UK first pressings makes it impossible not to compare the two.To be brief the difference is not huge by any means, but there seems to be a better presence to the US.Instruments are more in the room, tighter, and resolve more in the soundstage.Although thats mostly a figure of speech as these recordings are extremely quiet, recessed and not in the room to begin with. These small differences are also most likely just derived from a one generation younger master tape used for the US cut and you really have to listen closely to notice it, if there even is one as I doubt my own testing at times. Or its perhaps from a slightly lower EQ for the UK as performances seem slightly more muffled, but I dont think so as bass seems in favor of the US still. But in general this is whats to be expected from all Riverside US vs UK and EU pressings, and just vinyl pressings in general.Update:It should also be mentioned that for those who are looking for a better sounding pressing might be out of luck still as the tapes for this album are long lost which may also be why its seen such a drought of reissues with the lack of good sourcing. A needledrop from and old mother is apparently whats been used for many reissues, probably including the OJC ones.Perhaps a tape dub could be found and someone lile Kevin Gray could set out to do it justice but it may well be the case that it remains sonically deprived with the US original as your best option.Equipment Used:Rega RP1 with Paratrace tipped Nagaoka MP-200Cyrus 2 AmplifierSystem Fidelity SF-3050 Tower SpeakersCustom made HQ Speaker Cables

Absolutely avoid this pressing. Guitar sounds distorted on almost every track. Way too bassy, almost no top end. Surface noise throughout. Very disappointed, as I usually have great experiences with OJC.
Kegal
I have this one, and it sounds pretty great - especially for the money. WaxTime pressings seem to be a cut above other cheapo EU pressings.
Xava
Lots of surface noise on my copy. Plus it sounds veiled and sort of squashed. Probably my worst copy of a OJC repress to date.
TheSuspect
GoodTunes I have the standard OJC black repress and you absolutely nailed the sound quality. Surface noise is very consistent and it almost sounds like there is no top end in the sound. Usually OJC is pretty reliable. Not this time.... Tapes are lost since long ago. Only the originals used them.

Great copy. Nice pressing and audio quality. "In your own sweet way" is beautiful. It is a great copy if you want to listen to this record on vinyl. Japanese pressings, as usual, are amazing. Don't know if there's a mono japanese pressing that exists.
Ydely
Avoid Wax, except the 180gr you don't get anything else. Probably MP3 or CD was used as a source media. I bought Wes 'Full House' from Wax a while ago, first the record was warped second sounded dull compared to the OJC reissues of the 80s or even the CD itself.
Blackbeard
These are basically law abusing manufacturers. DOL, WaxTime etc are all terrible when compared to other quality pressings.
Swift Summer
I'm playing mine right now. The WaxTIme pressings (haven't seen one yet that isn't 180g) are nice, especially when I can't find a legit repress, and someone there seems to know their shit when it comes to jazz.
Dancing Lion
anyone else have these issues with their copy? I was thinking about getting one...
TheJonnyTest
For what it is worth, mine sounds pretty good and the vinyl is well-pressed physically. That being said, the Newbury Comics re-releases that are colored are a mix bag, especially the jazz ones. Sometimes you get a winner and sometimes you get a dud. This Wes Montgomery album is great, but my Charlie Parker "Bird on 52nd Street" is a war crime. Do not pay a ton of money for these releases unless, like Shawshark said, you are completing a collection.
Anayalore
Pretty poor pressing, has lots of marks and dents. Best avoided unless you want a copy to complete a collection.
Felhann
Shawshark Pretty poor pressing, has lots of marks and dents. Best avoided unless you want a copy to complete a collection. My copy is fine so not all these pressings have a problem.
Wrathmaster
Do you think that was just from shipping or would you say it's likely most copies will be marked and dented? Just wanted to clarify, thanks in advance
Eigeni
Mine sounds quite bad :( A lot of noise and hiss which is super annoying
Manona
endee Mine sounds quite bad :( A lot of noise and hiss which is super annoying DOL is not a quality reisdue label.

Mine had a lot of dust in the grooves. After a good clean it sounds ok
